Françoise Schneider-Gauquelin and astro-statistics
In 1955, the psychologist Michel Gauquelin publishes The influence of the stars . In
this book, he reports the results of its statistical surveys on
astrology that since 1951 he has carried out with his wife Francoise. Although
both statisticians do not show a lot of confidence in the astrological
traditions, their work shows that the character shown by the most
prominent members of different professions
is related to the planetary positions in the local sphere by occupation
studied some planets are more frequently present in the area to lift
them and their bedtime (Ascending and Descending), their upper and lower
culmination (Middle-of-Heaven and Fond du Ciel) for some "professional" than others . So Mars is angular it frequently in athletes, Jupiter among actors, and Saturn among scientists. Needless to say that such statistics comments have upset official science. One of his mandarins-marabouts of the time, Jean Rostand, has not hesitated to declare at the time that "if the statistic proves astrology, I do not believe in statistics" ! This
proves that the anti-astrology makes crazy ... Since the death in 1991
of Michel Gauquelin, his ex-wife Françoise Gauquelin-Scheider continues
their work commune.Comme him, she never tried to approach astrology as a
different angle than the statistical study, which it believes, rightly
or wrongly, that this is the only valid method to scientifically prove
the astrological fact.
Richard Pellard: What is your assessment of your statistical surveys on astrology, after nearly a half century of research? You had to face skepticism, sometimes against honest-expertise, sometimes biased, and the bad faith of anti-astrologers university. Can you elaborate?
Françoise Gauquelin: I'll probably disappoint you, but I consider such issues as absolutely normal. Yourself, imagine you have, after much effort, reached the enviable rank of professor at the College de France. You
could by the same token the habit of being adored by your students,
especially those who are still at the age where search adult models to
admire unconditionally. This is a flattering role much sought after by ambitious academics. How
could they accept easily than young strangers without comparable
academic titles to their claim the right to publish quite inexplicable
results for a conventional scientist, such as the angular position of
Mars in the birth of sports champions predicting their sporting success ,
for example ? And not only these results can not be
explained easily by our current astronomical knowledge, but worse: they
are strongly reminiscent of certain axioms astrologers. A
violent reaction of rejection, without any examination of statis-tick
evidence provided, of course does not seem worthy of a true scientist. But is not normal in one who has worked for years to enforce its intellectual dominance at the highest academic levels? Let's be realistic. These struggles are observed, these violent reactions of rejection in all organized societies, whether human or animal. I
think obviously very sad that the highly jovian temperament Michel's
has pushed relentlessly harass small males in place at the University
with our statistical results they could not refute. Michel chose to commit suicide rather than accept their scientifically unjustifiable tyranny. He thereby deprived of many years of exciting research that I can not share with him, alas. Each has its own requirements, of course. It
is not for me to judge which of us is better than the other chosen:
Michel up to the end of his convictions and disappearing with panache
when he was unfairly rejected by all the pundits in place? Or myself continuing research without interruption, to anchor in the minds demonstration started in my husband's company. that our methods are objective and continue to produce compelling results that any well-trained statistician recognized as such?
You refuse to set yourself up as an astrologer, and
yet you claim that there is a correlation between planetary angularity
and temperaments and you work with astrologers. Is it not paradoxical? Can you tell us what your relationship with astrology and astrologers?
Apparently your definition of an astrologer does not coincide with mine. For me, the astrologer receives guests and gives advice based on the examination of heaven. As this is not part of my activities, I do not present myself as a practitioner astrologer. I consider myself a statistician. This means that I collect information about the date and time of birth of people in character well marked. For
those interesting cases, it seems exciting to see if the character
matches the astral configurations provided by astrologers who have
written on this subject. But I have not made my livelihood. I
observed that a commitment as radical does not always leave to the
person who adopts the freedom to openly admit the failure of certain
assumptions fashionable. For example we have never had any
success in our audits traditions concerning Zodiac signs, which seems
unforgivable to many colleagues. I want to have the freedom to say openly what it is from this point of view. But predictions based on zodiac signs are what brings the most currently popular astrologers. Possible customers would not forgive me for denying these ingrained traditions. In
such a case, astrologers treat me the same way that university up: I do
not have the right to say openly in their publications or their
congresses that the Zodiac signs were statistically no predictive value
... J 'have been removed from a growing number of astrologers companies
invited me at first, convinced that gradually I rallierais in the
majority opinion. This was not the case when objective tests and repeated many times did not respond to their expectations. I consider it important to have known and keep my freedom of opinion. This got me eliminated only circles that I could not really approve. Besides
Michael and I found so well statistically confirmed results, and this
for so long, I did not usually the time to describe them all in front of
my listeners, even if I am granted a talk time exceptionally long.
What type of astrology and astrologers what do you feel closest and why?
After what I have just said, my answer should be obvious. I feel close to any truly honest statistician researcher in his statements on the assumptions that give positive results. I am rather demanding from this point of view. Since my earliest days under the direction of Michel, a first experience providing an outcome called "significant" in the jargon of statisticians and computers, not enough never to me. In fact we are working in an unstable area for many reasons. Purely
astronomical cycles can interfere with an astrological event,
apparently producing strong results without the astrology there is
nothing. There are also demographic irregularities that
must be carefully identified by adequate methods and eliminate without
confusing them with an astrological effect. Medical interventions, more frequent when a birth takes place in a modern hospital, artificially distort the natural curves of births. For
example we observe that there are fewer births that occur at night,
when doctors and parturients prefer to indulge in sleep. There are also less during the weekend, or around the year-end holidays. The
range of surgical and medical interventions obstetricians have to give
birth to a baby at a time that is best for the family extends from year
to year. I specialized in the study, because my data collections showed a sort of rivalry between "physiologically natural births" and "medical births" . If we do not let the baby choose their time of natural birth, the fragile correlation may be lost with the planets. The birth end up not indicate otherwise grand'chose desire of Obstetricians and parents to meet their own habits. How, in all this, it would show the baby yet its sensitivity to signals received from the cosmos? A
case by case basis of medical records in which all medical
interventions were recorded showed the antagonism between natural birth
and medicalized birth. The group that I was selected for the study included all births by Caesarean section, forceps and injection ocytocyques. Instead
of showing the usual correlation with the angular planets in the theme
of the parents, the themes of these babies violently removed by medical
intervention from the womb of their mother revealed a depression, a lack
of angular planets after sunrise and the upper culmination .
You are born on 06/19/1929 in Neuchatel 3 h 00 GMT. According to your own statistics and methods results, Jupiter (which was rising on the horizon) and in March (which passed the lower meridian) are dominant in your chart. How do you interpret this double influence? Can you tell us how you feel "Jovian" and "marsienne" ?
I do not feel particularly " Jovian " and " marsienne " for the reason that the Moon, Mercury and Venus were also found near the corners. I'm a complex case. To better understand how to interpret such cases, I collect now very complex cases, difficult to interpret. I hope to soon be able to make such interpretations correctly. Find valid answers is a long process when using statistical methods. But I have patience and tenacity and I intend to overcome these difficulties gradually. This could produce an interesting new book.
Your answer surprised me: you mention the influence of
Mercury angularity while your statistical work deny any influence on
this planet. Can you explain?
It is not in my nature to give up so soon hope. In the list of planets to the sterile now, Mercury seems to me the best candidate for a late hit. Twice already a serious researcher has given me a significant result of angular Mercury. Immediately, as it should, I published in my magazine Astropsychological problems , firstly the promising results, the other data of the same type, to try to replicate this success. It has unfortunately not reproduced, in the first nor in the second case. We have spoken of various reasons such failures when new hypotheses are discussed. But who knows? A third "promising hypothesis" might be more productive ...
Where are you in your research and publications?
Besides elucidating the meaning of the very complex case
astrologically, another publication also concerns me a lot right now: my
1982 book, Psychology planets should appear shortly in a new version, revised and updated in several languages. The success of this work is based on simple and objective statistical method adopted. Here are the main principles. In ten works by authors considered excellent by astrologers, I spot the chapter on the planets and I compare the traits cited to depict the specific influence of each planet, one after another. If
the same line is quoted by several authors for a given planet, I note
this trait as being particularly typical astrologically speaking, that
is to say specifically just for this planet. Then I look in
my archives of famous professionals which have been described by a
biographer as having the corresponding character. For example the line "active" was awarded by six major authors to the influence of Mars on native. And also 357 times a biographer noted that this trait characteristic of our professional lists. I extract from my computer horoscopes 357 professionals "active" in the opinion of their biographer and examine these horoscopes. Victory over a hundred horoscopes have, as I hoped, Mars angular area. All documents used in this experiment existed before my specialized study. So I did not have influenced their choice to prove my theory. The relationship of the line "active" with the situation in angular region of Mars at the birth of the cases are outside of me. I
proved objectively patiently bringing these cases and no further cases
... This same objective method can be used in other experiments. If all necessary documents exist prior to a new experience, it is ensured that the experience will be objective. No hostile to astrology opponent can deny. The influence of the planets on the character and can be demonstrated quite quickly. This is the case for the line "active" and thousands of other traits extracts long biographies of our famous professionals; This is also the case for all their horoscopes. There is data sources untapped to enrage hostile rationalistic conclusions astrologers. Therefore planets Psychology deserves to appear again. This type of data will appear as soon at computer Aureas (tel. 54 88 January 43 88) CDrom. This is an opportunity to leave the war more effectively against our detractors.
